The Boxcars

This is the first of a three part special series featuring music from the 2017 Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival (KMBF) in Haines Junction, Yukon.

Running since 2003, this very popular festival has presented amazing music from the finest artists in bluegrass with big names like The James King Band , Balsam Range and Breaking Grass. And in 2017 JAM Live! was there again to record more outstanding performances.

This year’s series opens with the five member band “The Boxcars”, hailing from Tennessee.

This bluegrass super group, who formed in 2010, has been Grammy-nominated and received numerous International Bluegrass Music Association Awards. The Boxcars have released four CD’s to date including, 2016’s stellar “Familiar With the Ground”.

One band member who particularly stands out is the group’s co-founder Adam Steffey. Adam plays mandolin and sings baritone vocals. His impressive list of achievements includes being a band member of Alison Krauss & Union Station and Mountain Heart, and performing with Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, The Dixie Chicks, James Taylor, many others.

Adam Steffey is joined by Ron Stewart (banjo and fiddle), Keith Garrett (guitar), Gary Hultman (dobro) and Harold Nixon (bass). And of course all perform vocals.

We recorded these live performances on the second weekend of June, 2017.
