Mandate
- To promote live music (not genre specific).
- To feature performers from the Yukon and adjacent regions which are not well presented in the commercial media.
- To present music genres performed live which are underrepresented in commercial radio programs.
Junction Arts & Music Society (JAM)
The volunteer-based Junction Arts & Music Society was founded in 1999.
Presentations include performing and visual arts, literary arts, artist presentations, film screenings and
workshops.
JAM Live! is operating under the umbrella of JAM. JAM does not provide operating funding to JAM Live! but covers all the expenses occurring for the acquisition of audio recording equipment.
JAM Live! Volunteer Team
There are currently five volunteer tasks:
- Audio recording engineer – recording live events on multi-tracks (4 active volunteers)
- Audio production engineer – mixing songs from multi-tracks down to stereo tracks (3 active volunteers)
- Voice talent – reading and recording hosting script (2 active volunteers)
- Hosting script editors – editing draft script provided by producer (1 active volunteer)
- Producer – Dieter Gade
It takes, on average, 40 hours to produce one JAM Live! episode.
Currently active volunteers are from the Yukon and S.E. Alaska.
Copyrights and Approvals
In the preparation phase before the live recording JAM Live! requests permission from the artists and presenters of the event to record the performance for use in the JAM Live! program. We also offer the artists the option to make the approval pending their review of the unedited recording and/or final mix.
JAM Live! grants the mechanical rights to its recordings to the artists. Artists have made use of the recordings in many ways including CD’s, demos and uploads to streaming sites.
A play list is created for every episode showing the song names, performer and composer and whether the song is performed by a Canadian. The play lists are submitted to SOCAN by the radio stations once episodes are aired.
JAM Live! Program Distribution
All episodes are uploaded to the National Campus and Community Radio Station Association’s radioExchange (112 member stations). From here, campus and community radio stations across Canada have access to the content of this archive. The NCRA Program Exchange is a simple way for radio producers to share their programs with other stations and a great place for radio stations and
programmers to find programming to air.
All JAM Live! episodes are also available on this website.
To date, 16 radio stations across Canada have aired episodes of JAM Live!.
Currently, 7 radio stations are broadcasting the program on a weekly basis in Canada. Two radio stations air the program on a weekly basis in S.E. Alaska.
JAM Live! is not available on streaming sites like iTunes, Soundcloud or Bandcamp.
To my knowledge, JAM Live! and BBC’s “Canada Live” are the only radio programs in Canada featuring one hour long live performances in broadcast quality on a regular basis (requires some additional research to confirm – maybe BBC’s Dave White has some information). I found a website in the US offering recordings of live performances for US radio stations but have not found any services
of this kind in Canada: https://www.liveinconcerthome.com/radiostations.htm
Possible Future Improvements
- Update website
- Seek permission from artist, record labels etc. to upload future episodes to major streaming services
