Martha Jane Ritchie is an artist and printmaker who lives and works in Haines Junction, Yukon Territory. Her bold linocut prints are drawn from northern life and the natural environment. The Village of Haines Junction is nestled under the Saint Elias Mountain range, and is situated beside Kluane National Park. The beauty of this environment – vast sky views, massive mountains, healthy wildlife populations, and the ever changing light and colours – are impossible to ignore and they create an unending supply of ideas and inspiration for Martha’s art.
Fashioning Clothing From Found Objects (Youth):

Friday, August 12, 2:00-6:00pm (ongoing, drop-in)
In this children’s workshop, participants will work with their choice of materials provided to create a miniature item of clothing. Fun and imagination are encouraged as the class’s imagination runs wild with recycled items, glue, tape, scissors and fasteners. The project will be made to hang inside of clear, plastic, salad boxes on small clothes lines – turning their project into a display case.
Suitable for children 7 and up unless accompanied by an adult.
Creating Your Own Fabric:
Tier 4, $75
Saturday, August 13, 10:00am-5:00pm (with a 1 hour lunch from 1:00-2:00pm)
Design and carve a simple printing block that can be used to create unique fabric. Participants will design a pattern that can be repeated over an entire fabric surface. As the class progresses, the addition of colour and dye to pattern will be discussed and practiced.
Discovering Blockprinting:
Tier 4, $75
Sunday, August 14, 9:30am-4:30pm (with a 1 hour lunch from 12:30-1:30)
In this playful workshop, participants design and carve their own relief printing block. The block is used to print on paper or stiff fabric which, when dried, is cut, glued, and assembled into an item of clothing. The artwork is then embellished by various means to create a finished piece. These pieces are intended as art work rather than functional items, however will open a gateway to fabric design and manipulation.
