In episode #78 we present jazz vocalist Karin Plato and her Quintet from Vancouver, British Columbia.

Karin grew up on the prairies in a small farming community in Saskatchewan. She learned piano throughout her childhood and later attended the University of Saskatchewan where she received her Bachelor of Music Degree in piano and voice. She further studied jazz and musical arrangement in Vancouver and vocal jazz at the Banff Centre For The Fine Arts.

In the late 1990s Karin seriously pursued a career as a jazz vocalist and composer. She began to perform a repertoire of jazz standards and originals in the Vancouver clubs and moved on to jazz festivals and concerts in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Now she can boast of having performed across Canada and in the USA.

Karin’s impressive list of achievements includes nominations for JUNO, Western Canadian Music Awards, and National jazz Awards. On the recording front she has released six CDs and her seventh album is scheduled to come out in March 2018.

Karin performed at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse in October 2017. At the show she introduced some of her new songs from the upcoming CD for the first time.

Karin’s quintet features some of Vancouver’s most sensitive and expressive players with Chris Gestrin piano, Laurence Mollerup bass, Joe Poole drums, James Danderfer clarinet.

We would like to thank  “Jazz Yukon” for their longstanding dedication to keeping jazz music thriving in the Yukon and the tech staff at Yukon Arts Centre for their support.

Videos of this concert will be posted on this page soon.
