For this episode of JAM Live! we hit the road and visited the Yukon Arts Center in Whitehorse. We followed “Jazz Yukon’s” kind invitation to record jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman and his trio from Los Angeles.

Tamir was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and began his keyboard studies at the age of 6. In 1984, his family moved to the US where this very talented young man further developed his musical skills. At age 14, this musical prodigy won Yamaha’s National Keyboard competition followed by performances in Japan and the “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” in Washington DC.

In 1993, Tamir Hendelman earned a Bachelor Degree in Music Composition, and became the youngest Music Director for the Lovewell Institute, an American non-profit organization that is dedicated to arts education.

Tamir has been in steady demand as educator, pianist and arranger, touring the US, Europe, and Asia. He has performed with some of the great Jazz musicians such as Natalie Cole, James Moody, Gladys Knight, John Pizzarelli and Quincy Jones.

In 2009, Tamir recorded with Barbra Streisand on her album “Love is the Answer”, produced by Diana Krall. He also accompanied Streisand on the piano on her music DVD “One Night Only”, recorded live at the “Village Vanguard” jazz club in New York City. Both recordings topped the Billboard charts.

In addition to his solo career, this highly accomplished musician has been a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra since the early 2000s.

In October 2017, Tamir Hendelman and his Trio performed at the Yukon Arts Centre with Alex Frank on upright bass and Dean Koba on drums.

We extend heartfelt appreciation to “Jazz Yukon” and the tech staff at Yukon Arts Center for all their support in making this recording possible.
