Paul Lucas Trio performing at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction , Yukon, on September 14th, 2016.
Paul Lucas was born in England but grew up in Vancouver. His father was an avid piano player and inspired him to deepen his connection to music. Although Paul studied marine biology at Simon Fraser University, his love for music prevailed and he became a professional guitar player, educator and composer. Now he looks back on a career of over thirty years and though he has only released four albums in that time, he has collaborated on stage with many artists, including blues legends Albert Collins and Bo Didley and jazz musicians Ben Tucker and Marcus Printup. While Paul spent much of his adult life in Phoenix, Arizona, his deep passion for Canada’s north, brought him recently back to his log cabin near Atlin, a small town in northwestern British Columbia.Back in the north, he wasted no time to team up with two old friends, multi-instrument jazz musician Daniel Janke and drummer Lonnie Powell from Whitehorse, Yukon. By the way, Paul confided that, as far as he is concerned, Atlin is part of the Yukon. So in that sense the Paul Lucas Trio is a Yukon band.
The band delivers sizzling samba inspired jazz. The music is a fusion of African rhythms, Brazilian samba and jazz improvisation. Listen for Paul’s high energy percussive guitar sound, its very distinct. The group plays both originals and arrangements by Brazilian composers Baden Powell, Sergio Mendes and Joao Bosco.
